INTERVIEW with "TAKUMI"

Staying 35 years.
A craftsman who refine technology
and continue to support MIROKU

Production Division, Production Section 1

Hideki Horiuchi

Just make the required things with the required precision

"Craftsman" is a skilled worker who makes things by their own skills. In particular in Japan, it means people who are good at manufacturing and there is a history that we have called and honored them "master" with respect. Mr. Horiuchi belongs to production 1st section, has been staying 35 years. He is a great expert who has taught to his juniors what is work as he has shown in his own action. However, he declines praise gently by saying "I am not a great man like craftsman and master. I have just been staying long." But Mr. Horiuchi saying concisely, has a presence that makes anyone who meets < this is what a craftsman is like>.

"It is difficult to explain my work. I process metals and make parts by using machine tools of different sizes and types. There are easy things, also difficult ones. I am processing required precision based on accuracy table written in a drawing."

A man can talk "just make the required things" is "only a man who can make it as required". A newcomer does not know what he does just sees a drawn plan. The ability to judge the required accuracy and work and to form it reliably can be said to be because he has the skill of the master who has accumulated through years of experience.

Work and purpose do not change even if the manufacturing method changes

The site changes. It is a natural flow that the work environment changes in the long run. The manual process is automated and a new machine is introduced. If the work is automated, the efficiency will increase. Because we are in the company, we not only have to improve our skills, but we must not forget the sense of "cost down". We will do the work while learning both the amazing skill on the handwork and the technology of machine operation.

"At first, I moved my hands and machine from the moment when I didn't know which end is up. It is nothing better than that if it can be done in half time after one month. I have repeated over 30 years that I work on something a little more difficult once I get used to it. Whether the machine changes or the customer needs change, I do the same. 『Make good things in a short time. 』 There is only this."

In recent years, the accuracy of customer requests for Miroku products has been steadily increasing. It is also a manifestation of expectations for Miroku. "To be honest, sometimes I think 『I can't do this anymore. 』" Mr. Horiuchi laughs saying that, but he has overcome a number of barriers while doing his job without hesitation "I can only do it when I am required." It is a wonder that the machine now seems to be a supporting role to help him when we look at his figure doing work without waste while being surrounded by modern opportunities now.

I like making things.
That's the only way to go

Generally, "factory" has an image of "hard, dirty, dangerous". Even for Miroku who has a reputation for being "easy to work" from inside and outside the company, securing good human resources is an urgent issue. Mr. Horiuchi pretends that "it's a great premise that any work is not easy," and says the rewards of this work as follows.

"It's a pleasure to be in shape what I have created, no matter how many years I have been working. I have been making plastic models since I was little, after all I would like to make things. If I don't like it, it won't last for 35 years. I like making things. That’s the only way to go."

The craftsmen who have been confronted with products in a casual but steady will work firmly and sincerely and will continue to be as one of the leading roles supporting Miroku.
